Worth County, Georgia

Well drilling & pump service in Sylvester, GA

Worth County peanut country, north of Colquitt and west of Tift.

Sylvester calls itself the Peanut Capital of the World, and Worth County is farm country through and through: row crops, center pivots, farmhouses, and homes on acreage around Sumner and Poulan. Nearly all of it outside town runs on wells.

Worth County sits over the Upper Floridan aquifer, and much of the county drains toward the Flint River, a basin where the state has watched farm water use closely for years. For a household well, that doesn’t change much. For an irrigation well, Georgia EPD requires a farm-use permit to withdraw more than 100,000 gallons per day, with a meter on the withdrawal, and the rules in the Flint basin have been stricter than elsewhere. Get that settled before you plan the well.

On the household side, the jobs are the same as anywhere in south Georgia: pumps, pressure tanks, iron filters, and checking a well after lightning or a long power outage. When a storm knocks the power out for days, a pump on a generator needs the right size generator and a safe, code-compliant hookup, done by a licensed electrician, never a cord plugged into the pump wiring.

Do I need an EPD permit for an irrigation well near Sylvester?

If the farm will withdraw more than 100,000 gallons per day, yes, and permitted farm withdrawals must be metered. Worth County is largely in the Flint River basin, where EPD has applied extra limits on new farm permits, so check with EPD early.

Will lightning damage my well pump?

It can. A strike nearby can take out a submersible pump, the pressure switch or the control box. If you lose water after a storm, check the well pump breaker once; if it trips again, leave it off and call. Don’t open the pump controls, which carry 240 volts.
