Local knowledge

One aquifer, a lot of different ground.

Every county we cover sits over the Upper Floridan aquifer. What changes is the ground above it: how thick the sand and clay is, how deep the limestone starts, and what the water picks up on the way. That’s why wells a mile apart can log very differently.

Who permits the well changes too. Household wells go through the environmental health office of the county health department where the property sits. Large farm withdrawals need a Georgia EPD permit.

Cross-section of a drilled well in south Georgia A well casing runs from the wellhead down through topsoil, red clay, sand and clay, and the Hawthorn clay confining layer, then an open hole continues into the water-bearing limestone of the Upper Floridan aquifer, where a submersible pump hangs on its drop pipe. A buried line runs from the well to a pressure tank at the house. Simplified, not to scale. Around here the sand and clay above the limestone runs from under 50 feet to several hundred feet thick, and it changes from one property to the next. The drill log on your land sets the depth.
